From the early start of my radio amateur hobby, (1960) I was interested in antennas and antenna constructions. At that early stage, I was most eager about why and how even a simple piece of wire could radiate or intercept signals. In those early years of the hobby, the only way to design antennas was by using the formulas as mentioned in the hobby magazines and handbooks. Today with the entrance of the personal computer into the radio shack, lots of software make it a lot easier. Antenna modeling programs are now available at low costs and some even for free and have multiple tools to compute and display the various antenna properties as gain, the feedpoint impedance, current along the conductors, and radiation patterns. From the first release of ELNEC and EZNEC, I started designing and modeling antennas and build several according to the modeled dimensions. I must admit that the computed theoretical dimensions compared to the real-life dimensions did mostly agree. When founding a rather noticeable difference, the reason was mostly the low test height, or nearby constructions influences. The Volumes of “Practical Antenna Models” are based on the 90 columns I wrote from 2009 to 2017 for the AntenneX online antenna magazine. The columns are now completely rewritten with many additions. One of the major additions is the use of the versatile AutoEZ application in conjunction with EZNEC. This application allows using variables, equations, and formulas to specify the coordinates of the wires and the definitions of insert objects, such as sources, loads, transmission lines, networks, etc. By using these options, you can easily optimize your antenna design until the performances you had in mind are reached, or even profoundly reorient, and reshape your design. All the EZNEC and AutoEZ options and features are fully explained in my book “Advanced Antenna Modeling” and where expedient, self-evidently in the new “Practical Antenna Models” volumes. The many emails I received from the readers of my book with the question ” Can you provide us with more AutoEZ model design files” were the trigger of this and more coming “Practical Antenna Models” Volumes. The use of AutoEZ allows also to read and open not only EZNEC files (.ez) but also many other model files types such as NEC, AO, NEC/Wires, MMANA-GAL, YM, YO, YW, ant, and model files produced by the programs NEC-WIN+, NEC-WIN-SYNTH, and 4NEC2. AutoEZ model files have the suffix (.weq).
